This weekend I’ve had a marathon of the first series of Lark Rise to Candleford. Also the book finally came from Amazon and I cannot wait to start the series.
Lark rise is such a captivating show, and my father even admits to really liking it. He started watching an episode with me simply because he had nothing else to do, and now I must rewatch the whole series with him. Not that I mind it’s just that I would really like to start watching the second series.
I love the scope of the show and the subject matter that it deals with. I’d read or watch just about anything from the Victorian era (and have read quite a few Dickens, Trollope, Bronte, Eliot, Gaskell, and seen the adaptations based on their novels), however in some ways Lark Rise is one of my favourite of the stories. This show can represent the horror of going to a debtors prison, to the solving of simple everyday problems.
One of my favourite and strongest characters in the show is Laura’s father, who even though he is poor and of the working class, he is always able to stand up for what he believes in and has so much strength and warmth. While the shows main character is Laura it is great how the ensemble characters keep the show fresh. While some like Stephen Cambell Moore I’d have liked to stay longer it is nice how different walks of life and ideas are represented in each episode.
