Day 15 » A fanfic
My favorite fanfiction is Wide Sargasso Sea by Jean Rhys. (Well, officially it’s considered a parallel novel, but that basically means published fanfiction that actually has some literary merit.) It’s source material is Jane Eyre by Charlotte Bronte. Wide Sargasso Sea tells the story of Bertha’s courtship with and marriage to Mr. Rochester, ending with her descent into madness. The novella takes place largely in the Caribbean - where Bertha and Rochester met and where Rhys was born - and is therefore flavored with elements of Caribbean culture and folklore. The novella is told from both Bertha and Rochester’s points of view and is written in a lyrical style. It’s a very beautifully written and structured work, and I recommend it to anyone that likes Jane Eyre or post-colonial literature.

This book has been on my to read pile for a year now, and your description of the story has really made me want to read it now!!
